Why Hemp?

Hemp is one of the world’s most biodegradable and sustainable fibres. It contains amazing natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which resist the mould and bacteria that can cause nappy rash. Its unique breath ability allows constant airflow, making it the ideal cloth to touch baby’s delicate skin.
Hemp Facts

Hemp is truly one of the world’s most amazing renewable resources. Known to be the most ancient cultivated fibre, over the past 12,000 years farmers have harvested industrial hemp into what now has come to produce over 25,000 commercial uses. These products widely range from high essential fatty acid foods and bio-fuel to cement and non-petroleum based plastics.

Hemp is grown without difficulty in many climates. Naturally protecting itself, it is easily sustained without the use of pesticides and herbicides that currently pollute our drinking water. One acre of hemp produces 4 times more pulp than that of mature trees, and it can be harvested in 4 months rather than 20 years. Choosing hemp as our renewable resource today can, in itself, reverse damage that has been done and help save the Earth.

Washing and Care

Hemp naturally has oils that need to be washed before adequate performance is achieved. Nappies will become more absorbent with washings. The hemp fibre should be washed at least three times, in very hot water, with 1 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. Nappies then can be used and washed using half the usual amount your favourite biodegradable detergent, or simply a splash of tea tree oil or lavender oil. Using a small amount of washing detergent will allow the cleaning agent not to build up in the nappies. We occasionally add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle for softness, absorption and to restore PH. Nappies will shrink to size, mostly in length, with the first three washes. We prefer to hang our nappies in the sunlight, but when this is not possible it’s ok to put them in the dryer*.

Using fabric softeners or bleach can ruin nappies and possibly harm your child’s skin. We advise that they should not be used.

* Tumble drying may extend the life of the fibres.

* Special Note
Please do not boil Baby Greens® nappies. Although made to withstand high temperature, doing so may result in damaging poly resin snaps and natural rubber in elastic.
